Should You Repair or Replace Concrete?
Repair concrete when the damage is localized and the remaining slab is stable. Consider replacement when movement is active, deterioration is widespread, or correcting the base and drainage requires rebuilding the section. The visible crack alone does not make the decision.

Four questions determine the sensible scope
1. Is the concrete still moving?
Measure crack width and elevation differences, take dated photos, and watch for change. Active movement can reopen a patch or crack an overlay.
2. Is the damage surface-deep or full-depth?
Scaling and shallow popouts may be repairable when sound concrete remains below. Deep deterioration, exposed corroding reinforcement, or broken sections require a different scope.
3. What caused the damage?
Poor drainage, missing support, frost, roots, corrosion, impact, and construction defects do not share one repair method. Correcting the cause protects the money spent on the visible repair.
4. How much sound slab remains?
A few isolated defects favor repair. Repeated failures across many sections can make removal and replacement more predictable than a patchwork of separate fixes.
Compare lifetime scope, not only today's price
A smaller repair is not automatically the better value. Ask how long the repair is expected to perform, whether adjacent damage is excluded, and what happens if the original failure continues. Replacement costs more upfront but can be easier to justify when it corrects the base, slope, joints, thickness, and drainage together.

Get an independent opinion when structure is involved
Foundation movement, load-bearing concrete, retaining walls, major elevation changes, and recurring structural cracks may need evaluation by a qualified engineer or other appropriate independent professional. A contractor selling one repair system should not be the only source defining the problem.
Ask every bidder for the same decision evidence
- What caused the damage, and what observations support that conclusion?
- Is movement active, and how was that evaluated?
- Which concrete stays, which concrete is removed, and why?
- What preparation and repair material are included?
- Will drainage, support, roots, joints, or reinforcement be corrected?
- What appearance, service life, and warranty should the homeowner expect?
