What Is Poor Man's Concrete?

Poor man's concrete is a DIY surface made by mixing Portland cement with existing soil and water, then compacting it and letting it cure. The technical name is soil cement. It costs $0.50 to $2 per square foot because you skip buying gravel aggregate and use the dirt already on your property as the filler. It hardens into a solid surface that works for garden paths, shed pads, and light-duty areas, but it is not a substitute for real concrete on driveways because it lacks the compressive strength (typically 300 to 800 PSI versus 4,000+ PSI for standard concrete) and reinforcement needed to handle vehicle traffic without cracking apart.

What Goes Into Poor Man's Concrete

Standard soil cement (most common)

Mix 1 part Portland cement with 8 to 10 parts soil, add water until damp, compact with a tamper or roller, and let cure for 5 to 7 days. The cement binds the soil particles together. Total material cost runs $0.50 to $1.50 per square foot because a 94-lb bag of Portland cement ($12 to $15) covers roughly 10 to 15 square feet at 3 to 4 inches thick.

Recycled concrete (crushed millings)

Some people also call crushed concrete or asphalt millings "poor man's concrete" because it is reclaimed material that compacts into a hard surface. It costs $1 to $2 per square foot delivered and works well for rural driveways and parking pads. It does not cure like real concrete, it locks together through compaction, so it needs periodic re-compacting.

Caliche or lime-stabilized soil

In the Southwest, caliche (natural calcium carbonate in soil) gets mixed with cement or lime to create a hardened surface. Regional variations exist because local soil composition determines whether cement, lime, or a blend produces the best result.
