Concrete is often a low-maintenance driveway option because it does not need regrading or routine joint-sand replacement. It can still need cleaning, crack monitoring, joint care, and optional sealing. Asphalt, pavers, and gravel have different recurring tasks, so the most practical choice depends on climate, drainage, appearance, repair tolerance, and how the property is used.

Why Concrete Can Require Less Routine Maintenance
No sealcoating cycle
Asphalt maintenance plans may include crack filling and periodic sealcoating. Concrete uses a different maintenance cycle, and whether to seal it depends on exposure, surface condition, appearance goals, and the sealer system.
No joint maintenance
Paver joints may need cleaning, weed control, or replenishment when joint material is lost. Concrete avoids individual unit joints, but its control and isolation joints should still be observed for movement, debris, or failed sealant where sealant is used.
No material replenishment
Gravel can migrate under traffic, runoff, or snow removal, which may require grading and added stone. Concrete does not need aggregate replenishment, although drainage and edge support still affect its condition.
Structural integrity
A driveway specification should account for vehicle loads, soil support, drainage, climate, thickness, concrete strength, reinforcement, joints, and curing. No single thickness or strength is appropriate for every residential driveway.
The Catch: Installation Quality Is Everything
Concrete is more likely to remain manageable when the design and installation address the site. Three requirements deserve particular attention in written quotes:
Proper subgrade
4 to 6 inches of compacted gravel underneath. Without it, the slab settles unevenly and cracks. This single step prevents most driveway failures.
Right mix and thickness
4,000 PSI concrete, minimum 4 inches thick (5 to 6 for heavy vehicles). Thin slabs and weak mixes crack under normal traffic loads.
Control joints
Cut every 8 to 12 feet to give the concrete a controlled place to crack. Without them, cracks appear randomly across the surface.
