Do You Need Gravel Under a Concrete Driveway?

Yes. A 4 to 6 inch layer of compacted gravel (typically 3/4-inch crushed stone) should go under every concrete driveway because it serves three functions that bare soil cannot: it drains water away from the bottom of the slab so freeze-thaw cycles do not heave the concrete from below, it distributes vehicle weight evenly so concentrated loads do not create pressure points that crack the surface, and it prevents soil expansion and contraction from transferring movement into the slab. Skipping the gravel base saves $0.50 to $1.50 per square foot ($300 to $900 on a 600 sqft driveway) but typically cuts the driveway's lifespan from 30 to 40 years down to 15 to 20 years because the slab cracks as the underlying soil shifts.

What the Gravel Base Actually Does

Drainage

Water that reaches the bottom of a concrete slab needs somewhere to go. Gravel creates a drainage layer that channels water laterally away from the slab because the gaps between stones act as tiny channels. Without this layer, water pools under the concrete. In cold climates, that trapped water freezes, expands by 9%, and lifts or cracks the slab from below (frost heave).

Load distribution

A car tire concentrates roughly 800 to 1,000 pounds on a contact patch the size of a sheet of paper. The gravel base spreads that load over a wider area before it reaches the soil because each stone transfers force to multiple stones beneath it. Without gravel, the concentrated load compresses soft soil unevenly, creating voids that cause the slab to flex and crack.

Soil movement buffer

Clay soils expand when wet and shrink when dry, moving as much as 1 to 2 inches seasonally. A compacted gravel layer absorbs this movement because the rigid stone particles do not expand with moisture. The slab sits on a stable platform instead of riding the soil up and down through wet and dry seasons.

The type of gravel matters. Round river rock rolls under load and does not compact into a solid layer. Crushed stone with angular edges interlocks when compacted because the irregular shapes grip each other. Most contractors use Class 5 aggregate or road base (a blend of crushed stone and fines) because the fines fill gaps between larger stones and create a dense, stable surface. Can You Ever Skip the Gravel Base?

Technically yes, but only under very specific soil conditions. Here is when contractors sometimes pour directly on soil and why it is still risky:
