How Long Before You Can Drive on a New Concrete Driveway?

Wait at least 7 days before driving a passenger vehicle on a new concrete driveway, and 28 days before allowing heavy vehicles like delivery trucks, moving vans, or dumpster trucks. Concrete cures through a chemical reaction called hydration, not by drying, and that reaction follows a fixed timeline: roughly 70% of the final compressive strength develops in the first 7 days, and 99% by day 28. Driving on concrete before it reaches sufficient strength causes tire marks, surface scuffing, and micro-cracking that cannot be repaired because the damage is pressed into the still-soft surface permanently.

What Happens If You Drive on It Too Soon

Tire marks

Rubber from tires leaves permanent black marks on concrete that has not fully cured because the surface is still porous enough to absorb the compounds. These marks cannot be pressure washed out. They are embedded in the surface.

Surface scuffing and power steering damage

Turning your steering wheel while the car is stationary (power steering turns) grinds the tire against the concrete surface. On fully cured concrete, this causes no damage. On a 3 to 5 day old driveway, it peels off the top layer of cement paste and exposes the aggregate underneath, creating permanent rough patches.

Edge cracking

Driveway edges are the weakest point because they are not supported on one side. Driving on the edges before 7 days can crack and chip them because the concrete has not developed enough tensile strength to resist the downward force of a tire near an unsupported edge.

Structural cracking under heavy loads

A loaded delivery truck (26,000+ lbs on two axles) on a 5-day-old driveway can crack the slab through the full thickness because the concrete has only reached about 50 to 60% of its design strength. These are not surface cracks. They go all the way through and are permanent structural failures.
