The University of Oxford Museum of Natural History currently shows a Special Exhibition called “Bacterial World” (19th October 2018 – 28th May 2019), showcasing the many beneficial effects bacteria can have on our planet and human life. We were invited by the organisers to contribute a recording to the Audio Wall that forms part of the exhibition, where visitors can listen to short explanations from scientists on potential impacts of their work in various fields of bacteriology. In our contribution, Dr Susanne Gebhard, RM4L co-investigator from University of Bath, explains how calcite precipitation by bacteria can be used in self-healing concrete, to help us develop a more sustainable future infrastructure.
