Research outcomes on the study of biological self-healing mechanisms in geological porous media, carried out by Dr Magdalini Theodoridou and Dr Michael Harbottle from Cardiff University, were disseminated at the last General Assembly of the European Geosciences Union in Vienna (https://www.egu2018.eu/) and the 2018 Japan Geoscience Union Meeting in Japan (http://www.jpgu.org/meeting_e2018/). During the events, Dr Theodoridou presented the methodology used to treat building stones with bacteria and nutrients, as well as the results of the first experimental tests and analyses which prove the potential of this method to protect and prevent damage in contemporary and historic stone structures.
